Featured Limpio - Using smartphones to wash hands

Discussion in 'Science & Engineering' started by Rithvik, Dec 20, 2016.

  1. Hello, my name is Rithvik, and I’m 16 years old. I live in Bangalore, India.

For the last four years, I’ve been working on a project called Limpio - I’ve created a smartphone case that you can use to wash your hands, all you have to do is move the smartphone above your hand for a few seconds and all the infectious bacteria should be destroyed.

The smartphone case produces ultrasound at a certain frequency (96 KHz at 50 db), which is capable of destroying the bacterial spores, thereby destroying the bacteria itself.

This smartphone case is also capable of destroying the bacterial spores of Bacillus anthracis, the anthrax causing bacteria, in only seconds. The Bacillus anthracis bacteria have the most impenetrable spores, and are almost impossible to destroy using traditional methods.

I have been fortunate enough to recently become one of the winners of the Solvey Project, a project that has garnered over 3 million views on Youtube in its attempt to find and support local changemakers trying to tackle poverty and social injustice. This also led to a Forbes article being written about my project!

Here’s my video application that I submitted to Solvey:

Here’s another video I made about my project after winning Solvey:

  4. Hi, I want to show it in one beautiful picture, but I'm going to be honest .
I can build stuff with my hands, and I'm really good at it !
I'm not very good at art at all ! :)
I will still try to create something beautiful, but if there are any suggestions on how I can get help to create this piece of art, please let me know.
  5. Hello, thank you so much !
I would love to have my project featured on the site, but how exactly will this help me develop my project further so I can get it to the hands of the people in developing countries such as India, where I live ?
I've been building this project for the last 4 years now, I started working on this in 9th grade in the summer vacation, because I had nothing else to do and because I love building stuff !
You can watch those videos to know more on how exactly I came up with this idea, I've explained it there :)

I applied to the Solvey project and I was selected as one of the winners and I was given a cash prize of 1000$ to further develop my project and I've been working hard on making my project better ever since !!
When I say, "I love building stuff" I actually mean it, when I'm all done and I see what I've created work. It makes me feel so damn happy :D I want to keep building things to better the world, for the rest of my life because that's what I enjoy doing the most ! So, that's basically what I want to do in the future.
